reMEmber, the Sussex based charity for people who have ME/Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, announces the result of  an exercise conducted at  its ME/CFS Awareness  Conference in Burgess Hill on 12th May. Janice Kent, the Director of reMEmber says “We called on doctors, other healthcare professionals and, of course, patients and carers to come along and tell us what they want from a better service. There was an excellent response; the hall was filled to capacity

Before the feedback exercise the audience was addressed by two of the UK’s top experts on ME, Dr Amolak Bansal, consultant immunologist and Medical Adviser to reMEmber, and Dr Charles Shepherd, Medical Adviser to the National ME Association. Many members of the audience then gave us their ideas for a better deal for ME/CFS patients which we passed on to NICE (The National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence) when we met them on 25th May to discuss the planned revision of their Guidance on ME/CFS. Our message to them was that greatly improved services with expert, properly trained doctors and early, accurate diagnosis are essential if the necessary improved outcomes, for both adults and children, are to be achieved. That is what the professionals, the patients and the carers are saying.

Janice adds “In the past we have had to meet the cost of this annual event from our own fund-raising events. This year we are very grateful to Burgess Hill Town Council for a grant of £1300 which enabled us to meet most of the costs of our Conference”.

reMEmber’s next big fund raiser will be the annual sponsored walk from Clayton Windmills to Ditchling Beacon on Sunday 1st July starting at 10.30am from the car park at the windmills. Bill Kent, Secretary of reMEmber says “Usain Bolt, the world’s fastest man has signed one of his T-shirts and donated it to reMEmber to help raise funds. You too can help adults and children who have this chronic illness by joining me in the walk. Children and dogs are welcome. Polly, the dog in the picture, will be coming with us.”
