Courses
Self management is a well-established technique which helps you plan and organise your life and can bring you a
better quality of life. Self management courses have been run for many years for people who are fit and well,
but it has also been found that specially designed courses can be of great benefit to people with long term
illnesses.
reMEmber is offering its own specially designed self management course for people suffering from CFS/ME and other debilitating long term conditions. It consists of a two and a half hour session each week for six weeks.
How we do it
Each course caters for about ten to twelve people. We examine the problems of having a long term illness and what can be done to overcome or lessen these problems. We do this through discussion, examination of coping techniques and experiencing relaxation methods. The most important aspect of the course is that each member works out her or his own individual self management plan.
The course takes place in a comfortable environment. It is taken at an easy pace with breaks at regular intervals. The presenters are experienced trainers who also have personal experience of long term illness. They ensure that the course is taken in a manner and at a pace which can be managed by all those taking part. The course involves no physical exercise and no-one will be asked to do anything they feel unable to do.
What we deal with
It is very important for a course of this kind to concentrate on the particular needs of those taking part. The timetable allows for flexibility. The subjects covered are:
- The problems of long term illness
- Activity and pacing
- Identifying personal problems
- Effective communication
- Goal setting and action planning
- Assertiveness
- Relaxation and visualisation
- Diet and healthy eating
- Managing stress
- Dealing with problem people

You will be given a personal folder that builds as the course progresses, a text book and a CD of relaxation music.
